Your water bill is based on a water rate structure that includes a monthly fixed meter charge and a volumetric water use charge. The Monthly Fixed Charge is based on water meter size and covers costs to provide service connections. The Volumetric Rate is based on how much water passes through a customer’s meter.

Residential water rates are broken into three tiers based on each Hundred Cubic Feet (HCF) of water use. Each HCF equals 748 gallons. Tier 1 offers the lowest prices and covers the first 16 HCF of water use during the billing period. Tier 2 prices are charged for water use between 17 and 27 HCF. Water use above 28 HCF per billing period are charged at Tier 3 rates. For example, a shareholder using 30 HCF of water in a billing period would be charged $30.72 for 16 HCF at Tier 1 rates, $25.85 for 11 HCF at Tier 2 rates and $7.98 for 3 HCF at Tier 3 rates. This would result in a $64.55 volumetric charge for the billing period.  The volumetric rate increases as shareholders use more water to reflect the increased cost to BSMWC of procuring additional supplies. The Volumetric Charges are added to the Monthly Fixed Charge to determine a shareholder’s total bill.
