BELLFLOWER, CA (May 25, 2022) – Bellflower-Somerset Mutual Water Company (BSMWC) announced the winners of its annual “Water is Life” poster art contest, which aims to promote and encourage efficient water use at home and outdoors.
The winning entries came from students in the Bellflower community and were announced at the most recent board meeting on April 25, 2022. The company received more than 100 entries this year in the contest open to kindergarteners through 12th graders.
Students who created the top three posters received Amazon gift cards. They were: first place, Daveney H., a fourth grader at Valley Christian Elementary; second place, Donovan M., a sixth grader at Washington Elementary; third place, Catherine S., a fifth grader at Ernie Pyle Elementary.
“I’m always amazed at the creativity and talent of our young artists and their ability to so effectively
convey the conservation message,” General Manager Steve Lenton said. “It’s important for young
people to understand the value of water, which is why BSMWC prioritizes educational programs like
the poster contest.”
BSMWC’s winning posters will advance to Metropolitan Water District of Southern California’s (MWD) regional contest. From there, 36 entries will be selected for MWD’s Water is Life calendar, which is distributed to schools and the community. The artwork will be featured on MWD outreach materials and BSMWC will spotlight the student’s artwork throughout the next few months.
Participating classrooms in the BSMWC service area were eligible to receive an art supply kit, which is valued at $70 and included crayons and colored pencils given to kids who wanted to participate.
